This incredible moment with an arctic fox was captured in the height of summer in Svalbard. Along with my expedition group, we encountered three kits and a mother playing and foraging around their den on top of the Ossian Sarsfjellet peninsula.
This particular fox took a keen interest in our presence. Behaving and looking very relaxed, the kit didn't hesitate to walk within a few metres of us while we stayed as still as possible. As the kit reemerged over a ridge I was quick to get on my camera's shutter, capturing the moment we both looked into each others eyes. A serene moment where I felt we shared a mutual appreciation for one another.
The fox's gaze still mesmerized me every time I look at this image. Trying to figure out its thoughts and emotions. Curious and confident is the expression that I gather.
In the summer months arctic fox lose their white coats to blend in with the exposed rock as the snow melts away. They are extremely hard to spot when completely still amongst the barren tundra. I love this portrait as the open backdrop strips the fox of its camo, revealing its texture and coat and allowing it's eyes to speak.
A truly unforgettable moment and a shot that will keep me guessing the animal's expression forever.
