Metamorphic
The Outer Hebrides in Scotland are an isolated chain of islands in the west. Alien and isolated, the landscapes are mostly built on metamorphic rock. Rock that has changed form from high temperatures and pressure over time. This aerial shot features the coastline of Cliff Beach. A secluded bay on the west coast of Harris.
Travelling the Isle by motorbike, I wanted to find a nice spot for sunset. I picked out Cliff Beach on the map knowing nothing about it and took a gamble. One that definitely paid off.
As I drove down the narrow winding roads, I reached the entrance of the bay. Pristine white sands enclosed by chiseled cliffs and rolling surf entered my field of view. The sun melted in the distance. This will do!
After taking a few shots with my DSLR, I got the drone in the air. As I flew it along the edge of the bay I watched the crashing waves and turquoise waters below through the drones camera. Combine with the sound of the churning sea, it almost made for a cinematic experience.
The further out to sea I flew, the deeper and richer the ocean appeared in tone. It was around this moment when a protruding field of rock came into view, enduring the waves. I could almost feel the power of elements through my phone as I hit my shutter.
From driving across the vast majority of Lewis and Harris, this shot really sums up the wild and rugged nature of the Isle's otherworldly landscape. Unique rock formations are around every corner, big and small, constantly taking your breath away. At times I felt as it was another planet.
