Arctic Forager
While exploring the arctic tundra around Hornsund, Svalbard, I encountered this wee male snow bunting foraging for food.
His snowy plumages caught my eye against the harsh brown tussock as he darted about looking for insects and seeds. Keeping up with him through my lens was proving to be tricky so I waited for an opportunity for him to stand somewhat still. Finally, his pace eased as he approached a small mound in search of food. I seized my moment and took the shot.
Aside from the snow bunting, I'm drawn to the purple saxifrage in this photo. They are sporadic flowers that decorate an otherwise, bare landscape in Svalbard’s summer months. I feel the small sprinkling of them in this photo illustrates that, giving the shot a subtle flourish of colour.
